What is a “DAS”?

“DAS” means Disaster Aid Station. A DAS is a collection point for Hill residents and visitors and businesses in an emergency.

Mountain Disaster Preparedness (MDP) Commanders and other trained Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and medical volunteers will convene on site.

MDP radio communications is coordinated to communicate our community needs to appropriate agencies such as our Fire Departments, the Office of Community Services, the Red Cross and Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES).

CERT search and rescue teams and damage assessment teams deploy from these DAS units.

Currently there are nine DAS units strategically placed on the “Hill”:

  • Pine Cove = 2
  • Fern Valley = 2
  • Greater Idyllwild = 4
  • Mountain Center = 1
  • (A tenth unit will be placed and put into service in 2021.)

These units are self-contained and are each supplied with first aid, communication equipment, search and rescue devices, lighting and power units.

THE DAS UNITS DO NOT CONTAIN WATER OR FOOD AND ARE SUPPLIED FOR THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAMS (CERT) WHO WILL OPERATE FROM THEM.

They are designed to be collection points for residents with minor injuries, those wanting Hill-wide emergency information and mobile device charging stations.
